While you wait
What to do in the next ten minutes.
These steps keep you safe and often save on the repair. Your dispatcher will walk you through them too.
Smell gas or CO alarm?
Get everyone out first. Don't flip switches. From outside, call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911. Call us once it's safe.
No heat
Check the thermostat batteries and mode, the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch) and the filter. If the filter is grey, change it. That alone fixes a lot of calls.
Leaking tank
Turn off the cold-water valve on top of the tank. Then shut off its gas (turn the dial to "pilot" or "off") or switch off its breaker. Move anything valuable off the floor.
AC frozen or not cooling
Set the system to OFF and the fan to ON. This melts the ice so we can test it properly. Close blinds on the sunny side of the house.
Breaker keeps tripping
Don't keep resetting it. Leave it off and tell your dispatcher which breaker it is.
Keep warm safely
Use space heaters at least a metre from anything flammable. Never use a gas stove or BBQ for heat indoors.
Why we're fast
The van is already in your neighbourhood.
Our on-call techs take their vans home across the region, from Sooke to Sidney, so the closest one comes to you rather than driving from a shop downtown. Every van carries the parts behind most no-heat and no-hot-water calls.
